Is the Stock Market Open or Closed on Christmas Day 2025? Holiday Schedule Explained

Wondering if you can trade stocks on Christmas Day 2025

Here’s everything you need to know about the market schedule around the holiday.

Christmas Day — Markets Closed

On Thursday, December 25, 2025, the major U.S. stock exchanges — including the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq — are closed in observance of the Christmas holiday

That means no regular trading on Christmas Day itself.

Christmas Eve — Early Close

The day before Christmas, Wednesday, December 24, 2025, the markets open as usual but close early at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time (ET).

This is a longstanding tradition to allow traders and exchange staff to prepare for the holiday. 📅 When Markets Resume

After the holiday, markets reopen on Friday, December 26, 2025, and are expected to trade normal hours (typically 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET) unless otherwise noted by exchange calendars.

Typical 2025 Holiday Days for U.S. Exchanges

  • Christmas Eve (Dec 24) — Early close (1 p.m. ET)

  • Christmas Day (Dec 25) — Closed

  • New Year’s Eve (Dec 31) — Open full day (regular hours)

  • New Year’s Day (Jan 1, 2026) — Closed

Quick tip: Regular stock market trading hours on non‑holiday weekdays are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET.
