The Hollyoaks family and fans around the world are mourning the loss of beloved actor Trevor A Toussaint, who has died at the age of 65.
Best known for his role as Walter Deveraux in the long-running Channel 4 soap, Toussaint’s passing was confirmed yesterday by his representatives and has prompted an outpouring of heartfelt tributes from co-stars, colleagues and admirers.
A Cherished Career and Impactful Role
Trevor A Toussaint was widely recognised for his portrayal of Walter Deveraux, the deeply religious and caring patriarch of the Deveraux family in Hollyoaks.
He appeared in 147 episodes of the show between 2018 and 2022, becoming a familiar and respected presence in the fictional village of Chester.
Beyond Hollyoaks, Toussaint also appeared in other TV productions during his career, including roles in series such as Death in Paradise.
But it was his portrayal of Walter — as part of one of the show’s most prominent family units — that solidified his place in British soap history.
Official Announcement and Family Statement
In a statement shared by his management, Advocate Agency, the star’s family expressed deep sorrow at his passing, describing him as an “enigmatic, loving father, husband, grandfather, uncle and friend.”
They thanked fans for their kind messages and asked for privacy as they come to terms with their loss.
Moving Tributes From Co-Stars
Tributes have poured in across social media from Hollyoaks cast members and others who worked closely with Toussaint:
Kéllé Bryan, who played his on-screen daughter Martine Deveraux and also served as his agent for over 20 years, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, saying he left “such an imprint on my heart” and celebrating his trailblazing work for Black actors at a time when roles were limited. She highlighted Toussaint’s refusal to compromise his identity — including turning down roles that required him to cut his dreadlocks — and credited him with breaking barriers in the industry.
Hollyoaks favourite Jessica Fox (Nancy Osborne) called him “such a gentleman” and said she was fascinated by his stories and life experiences.
Richard Blackwood, who portrayed Felix Westwood, wrote that his first scene in the show was with Toussaint and that the late actor always pushed him “to bring my A game,” adding that they became friends both on and off screen.
Several other cast and crew members also shared condolences online, remembering Toussaint for his warmth, professionalism and the positive influence he had on those around him.
A Legacy in British Television
Toussaint’s legacy extends beyond his memorable Hollyoaks character.
Beginning his acting career in the 1970s, he navigated an industry that too often typecast Black actors, and helped open doors for more diverse storytelling on British television.
His work on and off screen has been praised for its integrity, courage and impact.
Hollyoaks fans and colleagues alike will remember Trevor A Toussaint not only for the characters he brought to life, but for the genuine kindness and professionalism he showed throughout his life and career.
