Police arrest Salim Mohammed over GHC 7.5M robbery

The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of a key suspect believed to be involved in the dramatic GHS 7.5 million daylight robbery at a jewellery shop in Adabraka, which occurred in November 2024.

The arrest marks a major breakthrough in what has been one of the most brazen armed robbery cases in recent memory.

Daylight Robbery Shocks Adabraka Community

On the morning of Saturday, November 2, 2024, armed and masked gunmen launched a bold attack near the bustling Adabraka market in central Accra.

The gang targeted a vehicle carrying proceeds from a gold transaction at Cabest Jewellery, seizing approximately GHS 7.5 million as it was being driven to a bank.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants fired multiple shots into the air, creating panic among bystanders before forcing the driver out and loading sacks of cash into a getaway vehicle.

At least one person was injured during the frenzied incident.

Suspect Arrested After Months of Investigation

After more than a year of sustained, intelligence‑led investigations, police arrested Salim Mohammed, also known locally as Fariwata, in connection with the high‑profile robbery.

The Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) announced that Mohammed was apprehended on November 20, 2025, at a hospital in Ashaiman, where he had gone to seek medical treatment.

CID Director‑General COP Lydia Yaako Donkor said law enforcement had been tracking the suspect through focused surveillance and intelligence gathering efforts.

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that Mohammed and his accomplices used AK‑47 rifles to intercept the victims’ vehicle, fired shots to disperse onlookers, and injured the driver before fleeing with the cash.

Ongoing Manhunt and Recovery Efforts

While the arrest of Mohammed is being hailed as a major stride in the investigation, authorities say work continues to apprehend the remaining suspects believed to have been involved in the robbery.

Police have also reaffirmed their commitment to recovering the stolen funds and bringing all responsible parties to justice.

COP Donkor described the apprehension as a significant victory for the police, underlining the effectiveness of intelligence‑driven crime‑fighting strategies in tackling organized and violent crime in the region.

Members of the public with information that could assist the investigation have been encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement.

Public Reaction and Wider Implications

The boldness of the daylight robbery in a densely populated commercial area earlier sparked widespread concern about public safety and the capacity of criminals to execute high‑value heists in broad daylight.

Residents and business owners in Adabraka and beyond have since called for heightened security measures to prevent similar incidents.

As the case moves forward, the Ghana Police Service’s success in apprehending a major suspect is likely to reinforce national efforts to combat armed robbery and organized criminal networks in the Greater Accra Region and across the country.
